Nearly Eyeless California Newt
Crossing Hicks, 21Mar06

Late afternoon on a rainy spring day.

Something odd about this adult California Newt found crossing Hicks Road.

It had recently been severely injured, its head nearly crushed.

The left eye and nostril are completely gone.

A smooth, featureless snout and hollow left eye socket are all that remain.

But it has already begun the process of regenerating its damaged flesh.

Once off the road, it continued making its way towards Guadalupe Reservoir.

As good as blind and with an impaired sense of smell.

It still knew which direction to travel.

Go to Dragons Underfoot.
Go to Ensatina Salamander.
Go to Pacific Giant Salamander.
